Tight Jeans by Destiny Ekharaga
Tight jeans is a social realist short comedy, focused on three men waiting for a friend on a wall outside his apartment. In this time of waiting there is nothing to do but talk and through people watching, the men share a comedic conversation about their african history.
The cinematography at the beginning of the film allows lots of scene setting and the jump cuts differ from the longer ongoing shots of the conversation. When the point of conversation is established, of the tight jeans, a simple close up is used
This is followed by a fairly long tracking shot of the same view as the man with the tight jeans walks along, it is because of this that the audience knows these jeans have caught the mens attention and a quick cut to a close up of the mens expression and following eyes establishes their interest:
the performance of the three men is important in this short film as there is not an array of angles the camera can use to create any subtext. The mens stance and gestures convey that the boredom of waiting for their friend has sparked a very random conversation to fill the time that they are currently in. This brings in a comedic aspect as their boredom is shown through this.
The camera continues to slowly move from left to right in a slightly curved style as the men reduce their attention to these tight jeans. This is then followed by the story telling... "back in the day"... and then a slow zoom is used to bring in the audience to this story and listen to the man in the middle, with his interesting yet bizarre story, which is definitley not true but a sign of his personality.
This close up of the man in the middle is then used again at the end for comedic affect when the men realise they are going to be waiting longer than they expected. they see another man, this time with a tight shirt. the man in the middle begins again... "back in the day"...
